Hallandale Beach is located in Broward County, Florida. This beach city has one of the fastest-growing populations in Broward County and the Metro Miami area, due to the large amount of tourists who eventually retire in the city. Prior to August 1999, Hallandale Beach was simply known as Hallandale. Hallandale’s population was 37,113 as of the 2010 census.
The city of Hallandale Beach gets its name from Luther Halland, the son of a Swedish man who worked for Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad. During the early 1900s the community had grown from a few settlers amongst the Seminole Indians, to a dozen families of Swedish, English, and African descent. This community was primarily a farming community, and the beach had remained undeveloped and solely for recreational purposes. In May 1927, Hallandale was incorporated, and by that time, the city was a thriving community of 1,500 residents. By 1927, electricity and street lights were in place.
Nowadays, Hallandale Beach is known as the home of the world-renowned Gulfstream Park, which features horse racing and a casino. Additionally, Mardi Gras Casino is located in the city, and boasts the greyhound racing track that hosts the World Classic.
